Swan and duck food

What to feed ducks? Also, what about feeding ducks bread?
Is there any more relaxing and therapeutic pastime than feeding the ducks at your local pond or park? And if some beautiful and elegant swans happen to visit, so much the better! Whether we’re taking the kids for a fun walk or simply relaxing and enjoying some solitude after a stressful day, there’s nothing more cleansing than being able to feed and care for your local bird life. But many still bring a loaf of stale bread to feed their local ducks and swans. And while this may be accepted with great enthusiasm, it lacks the nutrition that these birds need to thrive in the wild. Instead, feed them our tastier and infinitely more nutritious range of swan and duck foods!
What do ducks eat in their natural habitat?
Ducks are actually omnivores. This means they will naturally feed on both plants and animals. Depending on the nature of their habitat, in the wild their diet usually consists of things like small fish, small frogs and molluscs, if they are located in wetland areas. However, in grassland areas, ducks will typically consume grass, grains and various seeds. Some ducks are known to frequent garden ponds and feast on the floating pond food given to fish. Regardless of location, ducks also like to eat fish eggs, algae and various insects. Many people are not aware, but ducks also consume small amounts of sand, gravel or other 'grit' like substances. This helps to aid their digestion and is important for gut health.
What do Swans eat?
Swans, like ducks, are also omnivores. They eat algae and other vegetation found on the riverbed. Swans have very long and flexible necks that allows them to easily dive down to the riverbed and collect a meal. They will also eat small fish and frogs. In addition to a river based diet, they will also happily consume short-cropped grass in fields.
The importance of feeding local ducks and swans
Swans and ducks are a part of our national identity. The former is the Queen’s bird and the latter are universally beloved throughout the land. In recent years, there has been much confusion about whether we’re doing good or harm by feeding our local wild birds. But the truth is that growing human habitation is leading to potential habitat loss which makes feeding our ducks, geese and swans more important than ever. The key, of course, is feeding them the right nutritious and palatable foods.
