Nest boxes provide a safe and comfortable place for your pet birds to rest and to lay eggs. Female birds will sometimes lay eggs which have not been fertilised and possibly even if a male bird is not present. If this happens then leave the eggs in the nest for the usual incubation period to reinforce the bird's usual cycle. Removing unfertilised eggs too early could result in the laying of further eggs. Continuous laying can cause serious health issues.
If you wish to breed from your canaries, budgies or exotic birds then nesting boxes are an essential inclusion in their cages. Check the requirements for the species that you keep and invest in a pet bird nest box of the correct size and
construction, otherwise your birds will probably reject it.
If your birds are not breeding successfully then adjustments to the nest box might yield the results you are looking for. It could be that the nest box is too small or too large. It could be too deep or access might not be sufficiently secure. If the nest box is too dark inside this could be intimidating for the birds. Moving the nest box to a different location that delivers more light will help but do not shine artificial light directly on the entrance to the nest box.
At Little Peckers we offer carefully designed pet bird nest boxes which will provide the correct environment for your birds. The nest boxes can be affixed to any cage and create the ideal place for your birds to lay and to incubate their eggs.
