Keeping chickens as pets is a very popular hobby. There has been a real boom in recent years as people become increasing concerned about animal welfare and want more locally sourced food. Not only do chickens and other poultry make great pets (they can be very entertaining!), but you have the benefit of walking a few steps and picking up fresh eggs, which taste great. Many people like the idea of keeping chickens and poultry, however they are a little anxious and unsure about how to start. In reality, it is much simplier than you may think. There are lots of gret resources online and in specialist poutlry magazines.
To provide a really quick guide, chicken needs to be kept outdoors in your garden with access to a coop or chicken house. It is advised that you provide 1000 - 1300 cm2 of floor space for each bird. It is advisable to buy one with a run so they can exercise and a nesting box where the hens can lay their eggs.
In terms of other supplies, you will need quality feed, feeders and drinkers and grit which is required to aid digestion. There are many other products you can buy, but these are the real basics.
