Chicken Run - The Latest Chicken News!
Apropos of nothing in particular, we thought we would bring you up to date with the latest chicken related news! You might be surprised to hear that any matters pertaining to poultry have hit the headlines but hens are currently big news.
Firstly, we should mention that more and more people are deciding to keep chickens and not just for their eggs. Chickens are becoming popular as pets much to the surprise of some of their owners who hadn’t envisaged cuddling up to one of their birds on the sofa! In an article online, the Guardian recently proclaimed that chickens are the new dogs. Who would have thought it?
Clearly the Guardian is exaggerating the popularity of chickens just a little bit but there is no doubt that many people are starting to see these birds in a new light.
Poultry News from Sweden
Meanwhile, there has been an unfortunate incident in Sweden. A less than attentive lorry driver failed to notice when 1,000 chickens fell off his truck recently. He lost his load in the small hours of the morning and simply didn’t realise. Apparently, there were hens along the road for several kilometres and drivers in the area were warned to be vigilant.
The lorry driver was eventually found and his firm helped to collect the birds. Sadly, many of the hens had perished either when they fell from the truck or by being struck by passing vehicles.
Chickens and Hurricane Irma
Across the Atlantic, chickens have been caught up in the extreme weather being experienced by the state of Florida. As hurricane Irma approached, hens were amongst the many animals which were evacuated from areas in the path of the storm. One image of hens wrapped up in newspaper ready for transit went viral when posted on Facebook.
The chickens appeared to be quite relaxed about their transport arrangements and now enjoy celebrity status!
If you love chickens, then you are in for a treat at the end of September. The movie Pecking order is coming to the UK! A massive hit in New Zealand, the film follows members of the 148-year-old Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club in the lead up to the NZ National Show. The chicken fanciers battle for glory with their birds in a unique and hilarious production which will appeal to people of all ages.
The film has garnered rave reviews. One wag, MACHINIMA SBOC, whoever they are, is quoted on the movie’s website as declaring Pecking Order to be "The best chicken film of the year!". Not that there is much competition! But with a 100% rating on rotten tomatoes, the film is clearly worth seeing.
That’s pretty much everything that we have to report on the chicken front right now. Unless you know something that we don’t. Get in touch if you have any interesting poultry stories for us to explore and let us know what you think of Pecking Order!
