The Big Birdhouse Tour

intu shopping centres have teamed up with the RSPB to create a tour of giant birdhouses that could be coming to an area near you.

The Giants

15 giant birdhouses are touring Britain and have created an exhibit which combines art and nature. The colourful art trail has been designed to inspire an interest in birds and is visiting intu shopping centres around the country. It is hoped that the project will reach 30 million shoppers to spread the message that British wildlife needs a little help. The 2013 State of Nature Report showed that 60% of the species studied were in decline. Everyone can offer a little support to wildlife in their own back yards. The RSPB’s Give Nature a Home initiative has been developed to promote this idea.

Celebrity Art

The exciting birdhouses have been decorated by celebrities including Rebecca Addlington, Jo Whiley, Alex Jones and Vic Reeves. The giant birdhouse are all over 5ft tall and create a truly interactive experience. The bird boxes are for sale at auction at the end of the tour. The sales will raise much needed funds for the RSPB. What on earth would you do with a 5ft birdhouse? It will be interesting to see what happens to each of these monsters after the auction.

Educational and Fun

Visitors to the shopping centres can learn more about birds, insects and other native wildlife. It will be possible to learn bird puppetry and to sample some yummy seed cake. Interactive games help kids to learn more about the different species of birds. The Big bird nest box Tour is great fun but carries a serious message. Hopefully the blend of interaction, fun, art and nature will have some impact. It won’t hurt that so many celebrities have put their names to the birdhouses.

The Big Birdhouse Tour team will also be visiting local schools in the hope of raising the kids’ interest in wildlife. An educational programme has been developed to compliment the national curriculum.

The tour is now in full swing but there are still plenty of opportunities to see it. The remaining tour dates are as follows:
