Hot Weather Tips for Your Flock

While sunbathing is beneficial, extreme heat can be dangerous for chickens. They don't regulate body temperature as efficiently as mammals, so hot weather requires extra care and attention.

Provide plenty of shade. Set up sheltered areas where your birds can escape direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day. Trees, shade cloths, or purpose-built shelters all work well. Make sure these spaces have good air circulation to prevent heat from becoming trapped.

Keep water fresh and accessible. Chickens drink significantly more water in hot weather. Check water containers multiple times daily and consider adding ice cubes or chilled water to help them cool down. Some keepers use shallow trays of water for birds to wade through.

Adjust feeding times. Feed your flock during cooler parts of the day—early morning or late evening. Digestion generates heat, so feeding during peak temperatures can make things harder for your birds.

Offer cooling treats. Watermelon, cucumber, and leafy greens with high water content are excellent summer snacks. You can also freeze treats in ice blocks for extra cooling effect.

Ensure good ventilation in the coop. Open windows and doors to allow air to flow through, and consider adding extra ventilation if your coop tends to get stuffy. Proper airflow prevents heat from building up overnight.

Watch for signs of heat stress. Panting, drooping wings, lethargy, and reduced egg production are all warning signs. If you notice these symptoms, move affected birds to a cool area immediately and provide water.

With a bit of planning and attention, your flock can enjoy the warmer months safely whilst still getting the benefits of natural sunlight.
