Ore Oduba is Scared of Birds
Strictly Star is Terrified of Birds!
Strictly Come Dancing Star Ore Oduba suffers from a bad case of ornithophobia (fear of birds). Ore is a sports and news presenter for the BBC. He has also presented the National Lottery Draw and the One Show. Fortunately for him, his work doesn’t normally involve working with birds. But a recent stint on breakfast television led to him having to tackle his crippling fear.
Standing in for Philip
Ore Oduba has been standing in for Philip Schofield on This Morning. The programme’s resident therapy team, the Speakmans, had previously cured his co-host, Holly Willoughby, of her fear of flying. Ore agreed to let them try to address his phobia of birds and so he was forced to tackle his fear live on national television.
The Calm before the Storm
Ore appeared to be calm just moments before his encounter with a scarlet macaw called Indie but then things started to go wrong. He had been taught coping mechanisms by the Speakmans and was happy to try stroking the parrot, but when the bird was placed on his arm, Ore was soon experiencing difficulties in breathing and he shrieked when it moved! He then stuttered, 'Steve, do you mind if you take Indie back for just a minute,' and looked really nervous. After Indie was removed, Ore slumped over his chair and explained that his heart was racing.
On a Mission
Ore had been working with married couple Eva and Nick Spearman. Speaking about this before-hand, he explained that his fear was so crippling that he wouldn't eat outside with his wife in case birds swooped in. But he was on a mission to be cured. He had suffered his phobia for as long as he could remember and was embracing the opportunity to change his life.
But there was tension in the air as soon as the live therapy session began. The presenter’s knees nearly buckled when the beautiful bird was brought onto the set and Ore appeared to be very agitated. It was the closest that he had been to Indie but he tried to brave out the situation. When the bird was placed on his arm he started to feel really troubled and was soon asking for it to be removed.
Keep on Dancing...
Following his encounter, Ore was quickly back to himself and looked cheerful as he headed off for more Strictly rehearsals with his dance partner Joanne Clifton. He was in training to perform a Paso Doble. He has taken to social media to speak glowingly about his time on This Morning and so the encounter with the parrot doesn’t seem to have dented his enthusiasm. He said, 'She is lovely, a beautiful bird and I can appreciate that but when she put her claws on my arm, I've never done that before. She clutched on to me and she was really close. It didn't hurt.'
Better luck next time Ore!
